jeld-wen design a door competition

In 2006, window and door manufacturer Jeld-Wen held a national competition among architecture students, and tasked them to re-imagine the idea of the front door. First prize was given to this design and a full scale prototype of the door was built and put on display for the Jeld-Wen booth at a construction trade industry convention in Orlando, Florida.

Using the board and batten system found in Frank Lloyd Wright’s Jacobs I House and the “Dutch” style door as inspiration, a single door comprised of six horizontal doors was created. The door could be opened as a single unit for access in and out of a residence, or individually to meet the needs of the owner in any situation, such as allowing for cross ventilation on a warm day, letting a pet in or out, or receiving deliveries.
