wilderness lodge

shenandoah, virginia

Set in a remote, natural landscape among the mountains of the Shenandoah, this private lodge is a study into the selective subtraction of a solid to meet certain programmatic needs in a thoughtful manner as well as create spaces that invoke a sense of security and intimacy.
To create these spaces, a monolithic concrete form is carved out and a fine wooden box is placed inside to clearly delineate the exterior from the interior. The use of this natural material adds warmth to the inherent cave like qualities of the structure and relates directly to the nature that surrounds it.

With the bedroom and bathroom located on the ground level, the second level acts as the main living area, with its floor to ceiling glazing, increased ceiling height, and outdoor deck opening out onto the natural landscape beyond.
