symbolic world cup structure

rio de janeiro, brazil

The prompt for this competition tasked the designer to reactivate an existing, unused plaza in the Lapa neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro in anticipation of the 2014 World Cup.

To draw both visitors and locals back to this forgotten space, an area for enjoying the 2014 World Cup was designed, as well as a place for recreation and exercise well after the games are over. An indoor-sized soccer field dominates the majority of the site, which is bookended by artificial “hills” that form a tower for projecting the matches at one end and the roof of a visitor’s center and café at the other. Underneath the tower side “hills”, space is created for a farmer’s market where visitors and residents alike can mingle and shop from local vendors.
